A Special Dog From My Childhood
Floss Border Collie memories
Border Collie pet
When I was about ten years old, we had a wonderful dog called Floss. I am now over 80 years old, but the memory of her has stayed with me all my life. Some dogs leave a mark on your heart that never fades, and Floss was one of those dogs.
She was gentle, loyal, and full of personality. Even now I can clearly picture her and remember the little things that made her so special.
Floss and Her Missing Eye
One of the things that made Floss unique was that she had lost one of her eyes. Because of this she would often tilt her head to one side when she looked at you.
It gave her a curious and thoughtful expression, almost as if she was studying you carefully. As a child I always found it endearing, and it became one of the things everyone remembered about her.
The Day Floss Rolled in the Manure
One day Floss came home after clearly rolling in manure in a nearby field. Dogs sometimes do this instinctively, although as a child I certainly didn’t understand why at the time.
She came into the house filthy and smelling terrible. Because of the mess she got a very strong telling off and was given a thorough wash, almost like a shower.
Looking back now, I suspect the scolding may have upset her more than we realised.
When Floss Went Missing
Not long after that incident, Floss disappeared. We searched everywhere but could not find her.
Two days later we finally discovered where she was. She had crawled underneath our garden shed and was lying there quietly.
But she was not alone.
Floss had given birth to seven puppies.
Bringing Her Puppies Home
It became clear that Floss had not felt comfortable having her puppies in the house, perhaps because of the telling off she had received earlier.
When we found her, we gently cuddled and reassured her. Her tail began wagging again, and she seemed happy to see us.
Then something wonderful happened.
One by one, Floss carefully picked up each of her seven puppies and carried them into the house. She placed them on her bed in the passage, as if she now knew it was safe for them to be there.
A Memory That Never Fades
Many years have passed since those days, but the memory of Floss has never left me. Childhood dogs often become some of the most meaningful companions we ever have.
Floss was more than just a family pet. She was part of my childhood and part of the story of my life.
Even after seventy years, I can still picture her tilting her head to look at me.
And I always will.
💡 Answer to your question about manure:
Dogs often roll in manure or strong smells because of instinct. Some behaviour experts think it comes from their wolf ancestors trying to mask their own scent while hunting. Others believe dogs simply enjoy the smell or are trying to bring interesting scents back to their pack.
